Every year, U.S. News and World Report reviews more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals and generates a list featuring the best of the best. Their list of the best rehabilitation hospitals is based on doctor recommendations, and may include locations that you’ve never heard of before.

In order, below are the top ten rehab hospitals in the U.S. and what they’re known for:
- Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. This nationally ranked hospital houses 182 beds and employs 57 doctors specializing in rehab medicine. It services patients with a wide range of rehab needs, including stroke recovery, chronic pain, brain injuries, prosthetics and neurological disorders. Per their mission statement, the hospital has a focus on “integrated research, scientific discovery and education.” It is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and scored a 52.6 percent rating (“very strong”) in the U.S. News and World Report ranking in its reputation with specialists.
- TIRR Memorial Hospital. Located in Houston, TX, this 119-bed rehab hospital currently employs seven physicians specializing in rehab services. It received a 28.9 (“strong”) in its reputation with specialists according to the report. It is also CARF-accredited. TIRR Memorial offers a variety of therapies and rehab, including physical, occupational, aquatic, music, speech and walking therapy, as well as cancer rehabilitation, mobility assessments and much more. It is “continually recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals by S. News & World Report,” and is also a teaching college for Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
- Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. With a bed count of 336, this hospital, located in West Orange, NJ, received a 27.4 percent ranking to secure its spot as the third most highly ranked hospital. It currently reports 6,869 admissions per year. Programs include rehab for spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, orthopedics, cancer, cardiac events and more. The Kessler Institute places emphasis on its core values: respect, excellence, achievement, compassion and teamwork.
- University of Washington Medical Center. Seated in Seattle, WA, this hospital boasts 450 beds and offers general medicine and surgery. It employs 14 doctors in rehab medicine. UWMC scored a 23.4 percent rating on the U.S. News and World Report survey; it’s ranked fifth in the nation for cancer treatment and the 27th for cardiology and heart surgery, and it is CARF-accredited. UWMC is a leading academic medical center that prides itself on community involvement, and employs award-winning faculty, including Nobel Prize winners in physiology and medicine.
- Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic is a “nonprofit worldwide leader in medical care, research and education for people from all walks of life.” Its Rochester, MN location received a quality ranking of 22.6 from the U.S. News and World Report, with national rankings in 15 specialties, including cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, and diabetes and endocrinology for both adults and pedes. It is also CARF-accredited. This location is a general and surgical hospital with 1,132 beds and 68 rehab physicians. Other major locations include Scottsdale, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; and Jacksonville, FL.
- Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital. In affiliation with Mass General, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital “offers world-class inpatient and outpatient care” as well as exceptional clinical care, while promoting medical education, and advancing research. Located in Charlestown, MA outside of Boston, this hospital is CARF-accredited and houses 196 beds with 8 rehab physicians. It received a 15.8 percent score in the U.S. News report. Treatment specialties include adaptive sports, burn rehab, hand conditions, pain management and pediatrics.
- Craig Hospital. Located in Englewood, CO, this hospital houses 68 beds, and employs 8 rehab physicians. It received a 15.8 percent score, and focuses on teamwork by “empowering patients to fully participate in their program of care, from planning and scheduling to working hard to progress.” Programs and services include physical, occupational and respiratory therapy; spinal and TBI rehab; and therapeutic recreation.
- MossRehab. Receiving a 10.5 percent rating, MossRehab offers services for amputation and prosthetics, communication disorders, spinal cord injuries, sports rehab, concussion, stroke, TBI and mobility disorders. It is the largest independent medical center in the Philadelphia area, and its programs are “regularly recognized for clinical excellence and above-average outcomes.”
- Shepherd Center. In Atlanta, GA, this 100-bed acute long-term care hospital employs four rehab physicians, and scored a 10.1 percent on the U.S. News report. It is CARF-accredited and prides itself on helping “people with a temporary or permanent disability caused by injury or disease rebuild their lives with hope, independence and dignity, advocating for their full inclusion in all aspects of community life while promoting safety and injury prevention.”
- Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center. With 791 beds, this NYC hospital is nationally and regionally ranked, and also rated as a high-performing hospital in four adult procedures and conditions. Specialties include cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology, orthopedics and psychiatry. It employs 65 rehab physicians and received a 9.2 percent rating on the U.S. News report.
